A low-resolution sprite enlarged until each pixel becomes a glazed ceramic tile — sixteen colours, not one more.

The constraint was the medium. Sixteen colours, a grid, and a figure everyone read instantly. Rendered as physical tiles with domed glaze, thin dark grout and a raking light giving every square its own highlight and its own small shadow, a technical limit becomes a material.
