A three-and-a-half inch disk with the metal shutter slid fully open, the dark magnetic media exposed.

The shutter existed to prevent exactly this. Slid back, it shows what was always in there — a matte brown circle on a metal hub, nothing luminous, nothing precious, and the entire contents of somebody’s year.
